Update on Power Outage Update on Power Outage NCS Families,  I wanted to let you know that power was restored at NCS at approximately 11:35 a.m. today. During the outage, our Food Service Department and our Facilities Department made sure that our students had lunches, access to drinking water, hand sanitizer, and working bathrooms. Additionally, because the sun is shining and temperatures were in the mid-60s, there were no safety issues related to heat.  However, I did want to acknowledge that the disruption likely proved especially challenging for remote learners due to the loss of Internet. If your son or daughter is concerned that they may have missed out on important learning this morning, please have them reach out to their teachers when they have a minute.  It ...

Staff Appreciation Week Staff Appreciation Week Dear NCS Families, In the best of times, we know the work of educators is incredibly difficult. So much so that after more than 30 years in the classroom, one Stanford professor commented that teaching “is perhaps the most complex, most challenging, and most demanding, subtle, nuanced, and frightening activity that our species has ever invented—the only time a physician could possibly encounter a situation of comparable complexity would be in the emergency room of a hospital during or after a natural disaster.”    And that was before the COVID-19 pandemic.   As you well know, the past year has brought challenges never before experienced by educators. Through it all, our faculty and staff have gone above and beyond to master remote instruction, ...
Naples Recognized as 15th Best High School in the Rochester Area Naples Recognized as 15th Best High School in the Rochester Area Dear NCS Family, Earlier today, we learned that the U.S. News & World Report had ranked Naples High School #15 on its list of “Best High Schools in the Rochester, NY Area.” Close to 18,000 schools were evaluated nationwide, and the ranking acknowledges that “great high schools educate all students from different social and economic backgrounds, exposing them to challenging coursework on the path to graduation.” Being ranked 15 th out of 74 schools in our area is a point of pride, and it is a credit to the hard work of our student body. Additionally, it validates the good work being done by our faculty and staff. They say that, “the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers,” and the recognition reinforces the ...
April 14 Parent Update April 14 Parent Update NCS Families and Staff, This past weekend, I emailed with an update regarding the revised guidance for in-person learning that was recently released by the NYS Department of Health (DOH). Unfortunately, however, after reviewing the document with local health officials, we are unable to shift from 6 to 3 feet of spacing in the High School because of the transmission risk level that currently exists in Ontario County. Please know that we share the sense of disappointment and frustration that many of you are feeling right now. We were hopeful that the revised guidance would allow us to increase the number of in-person learners in the High School, and I have tried to answer some of the questions you might have in the space below. Why can’t we bring more High School ...
COVID Case at NCS COVID Case at NCS Dear NCS Families and Staff, Earlier today, we were notified that a student in our High School had tested positive for COVID-19. The individual was last at school on Thursday, April 8, and they are currently in isolation under Department of Health guidelines. As soon as we learned of the situation, we immediately began the contact tracing process. Ultimately, the decision was made to quarantine 2 additional students. To help keep our school community safe, we are urging everyone to take the following preventative measures: Prioritize masking and maintain at least six feet of social distance Wash their hands regularly, using soap and hot water for about 20 seconds Avoid touching their eyes, mouth, and nose  As always, please do not hesitate to call or ...
April 11 Parent Update April 11 Parent Update Dear NCS Family,    Friday evening, the NYS Department of Health released updated guidance ( click here ) for schools related to in-person instruction. The information is largely based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and it allows schools to relax social distancing guidelines from six to three feet as long as buildings are located in counties with low, moderate, or substantial risks of transmission.    Because close to 95% of our Elementary School students are already back to in-person learning five days per week, the change will not have much of an impact on our youngest learners. At the secondary level, the new social distancing guidelines should give us the ability to increase the number of students we have attending ...
March 19 Parent Update March 19 Parent Update Dear NCS Families,    As many of you know, earlier today the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidance indicating that schools would be allowed to distance students at 3 feet as opposed to 6.  (Note: The change was anchored in part in results from a notable Massachusetts-based study .)  The announcement was welcome news, and it would likely give schools like NCS the ability to bring increased numbers of students back for in-person learning.    At this point, however, New York State has not yet given local Departments of Health (DOH) the ability to authorize modifications to guidelines that are currently in place.    Over the weekend, you will likely see news stories making predictions about what changes ...
March 15 Q & A for NCS Parents March 15 Q & A for NCS Parents Dear NCS Families, Over the past few weeks, the reopening of school has received a great deal of national as well as local attention. However, because things can vary greatly from one region to the next, I wanted to pass along a handful of updates related specifically to NCS. I have tried to capture answers to questions we have recently received below, and I would encourage you to reach out with an email or a phone call if you would like to talk in more detail. Will my son or daughter have to quarantine if we travel over Spring Break? This was understandably welcome news for many who are eager to visit family or enjoy ...

Each of the students attended school at least one day this week, while the staff member was last at work on Friday, February 12. After completing the contact tracing process, the decision was made to quarantine 9 additional students and 1 staff member. Additionally, we initiated a 48-hour “pause” on Boys Varsity Basketball as a precautionary measure. At this point, we anticipate that the season will resume on Saturday, February 27, when our Big Green athletes travel to Midlakes.   I know that receiving communications like this can be unsettling.
