Resources Regarding “13 Reasons Why”
NCS Parents and Guardians:
A year ago, I wrote to you after the series “13 Reasons Why” was released by Netflix. Because many believed that the show sensationalized mature subject matter involving suicide and depression, mental health professionals across the country expressed concern about the impact the content could have on impressionable children and adults.
Because the second season of the series airs this Friday (May 18), I wanted to pass along the following resources you might consider using if you choose to start a dialogue with your son or daughter about the show:
Click HERE to read an article titled, “How to Prepare for ’13 Reasons Why’ Season 2.” The resource outlines how to use a unique code to restrict the programs ...

Message Regarding NCS Memorial Trees
Dear Naples School Community:
This past year, the Naples school community approved a capital project to construct a new bus loop in front of the Elementary School. Because the wellbeing of students is always at the forefront of decision-making, a special focus was placed on designing a much safer pick-up and drop-off area. However, although the architects did their very best to honor the existing bus loop footprint, it quickly became apparent that it was simply not possible to make the area safer without removing a number of trees in order to modify the design of the space.
While the trees have helped the school property to shine aesthetically, many of them have also served as memorials to special NCS students and staff members who have passed away over the years. Because NCS ...

Naples High School Receives Silver Medal in National H.S. Rankings
For the third year in a row, Naples High School has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top high schools in the United States with a Silver Medal designation. The U.S. News Best High Schools list has Naples ranked #110 (up from #143 in 2017) in New York State, and #1,112 (up from #1,630 in 2017) when compared to high schools from across the nation.
To produce the rankings, U.S. News & World Report used a methodology that took into account “student performance on state assessments, socioeconomic factors, student graduation rates and college readiness.”
“We couldn’t be more proud of our students and all the hard work they put into their studies,” said Matt Frahm, Superintendent of Schools. He went on to add, “It is entirely ...

A Message Regarding School Safety
Dear NCS Parents:
I hope this note finds you well and that you were able to enjoy time with friends and family over February Break. I am writing to you this evening as one of the 175 educators at NCS who will be caring for your child when they return to school tomorrow morning. Like all of you, I have spent time thinking and talking with others in recent days about the tragedy that occurred in Parkland, Florida, and how the events can cause us to question the safety we sometimes take for granted in our learning community. While law enforcement professionals do not recommend that school districts publically share details involved with safety practices and procedures, I wanted you to be aware of the following:
• NCS has a District Safety Team ...

Weather Related Information
Dear NCS Parents and Guardians:
As temperatures continue to drop, our school offices have already begun receiving phone calls from parents inquiring about a possible school closure. Because closing school is one of the most difficult decisions districts have to make, I wanted to share some additional information regarding extreme temperatures and winter weather.
When is it too cold for school?
As New Yorkers, we know all too well that winter temperatures may drop to below zero on a fairly regular basis. However, experts in the health field have established -25 degrees (25 degrees below zero) as the benchmark used for closing schools due to temperature and wind chill.
How will I know if school is cancelled or delayed?
As soon as a decision is made to close or delay ...

Thank You from the Naples Central School District
Dear NCS Parent/Guardian:
As we prepare for the start of 2018, I wanted to take a minute to thank you for your unwavering support of education here in the Naples Central School District. Earlier in the year, our Board of Education asked that you consider taking a fifteen-question survey to provide us with the valuable feedback needed for constant improvement. I am pleased to report that 118 parents and guardians completed the survey, and that the results were overwhelmingly positive. While a more detailed breakdown of the information can be found by clicking HERE , I wanted to highlight several areas of celebration as well as a couple places where we will continue to grow.
Areas of Celebration:
87% of respondents feel welcome and respected when they attend meetings, ...

School Tax News
Recently, Governor Cuomo signed an Executive Order to assist taxpayers seeking to pay property taxes prior to December 31 in order to deduct them on their 2018 federal income taxes. The Governor and his budget director have explained that the action was directed primarily at local governments which operate on a calendar year (January 1 – December 31) fiscal year. They acknowledged that facilitating pre-payment of property taxes may not be possible for most school districts.
The Naples Central School District cannot collect pre-payment of school taxes for federal tax purposes. Final payments of 2017-18 school taxes were already due. We are not able to provide estimated tax bills for 2018-19 as the school district will not adopt a budget for that year until the ...
