Resources Regarding “13 Reasons Why”

NCS Parents and Guardians:

A year ago, I wrote to you after the series “13 Reasons Why” was released by Netflix. Because many believed that the show sensationalized mature subject matter involving suicide and depression, mental health professionals across the country expressed concern about the impact the content could have on impressionable children and adults.

Because the second season of the series airs this Friday (May 18), I wanted to pass along the following resources you might consider using if you choose to start a dialogue with your son or daughter about the show:
  • Click HERE to read an article titled, “How to Prepare for ’13 Reasons Why’ Season 2.” The resource outlines how to use a unique code to restrict the programs your child watches on Netflix.
  •  Click HERE for resources from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that provide tips on talking with your child about the complex material examined in “13 Reasons Why.”
  • Click HERE for information on the “Talk Saves Lives: A Brief Introduction to Suicide Prevention” presentation NCS will be hosting at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria on Thursday, May 24.
We know that each child in our school community is someone’s whole world, and we stand ready to do whatever we can to help ensure the safety and emotional well-being of all our students. If we can help provide any additional support as you find ways to create safe spaces for your child to openly discuss their thoughts or feelings, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Sincerely,

Matt Frahm
