Information on Student Plans for the March 14, 2018 Walkout

Dear NCS Parents:

As you may know, students across the country have been planning a National School Walkout for Wednesday, March 14, 2018. In recent days, Mrs. Ashton and I have met with a group of students who would like to organize several activities here at NCS that day to honor the lives of the victims of the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida. In each of the conversations, we have both been proud as well as impressed with the maturity and thoughtfulness of our learners. Because the individuals do not wish to disrupt the learning for others, they have organized the following activities that will mainly take place during our regular lunch periods:
  • 17-second moment of silence on the morning announcements in the High School
  • Silver and burgundy clothing (Marjory Stoneman Douglas school colors)
  • Student handprints on a banner reading “Never Again”
  • Student safety comments on green and white hearts
  • Voter registration for any students 18 years of age or older
  • 17-minute silent walk
Our focus for the Naples school community on March 14, 2018 will be to provide a safe and non-coercive environment in which students can freely express themselves as well as demonstrate care for others. Members of our faculty, administration, as well as our School Resource Officer (SRO) will be present for all of the activities, and we are committed to providing a safe and supervised space for our learners.

When our students graduate each June, their NCS diplomas mean they have mastered a specific set of skills and body of content knowledge. More importantly, however, they mean that our learners have spent time growing as citizens who can lead, think critically, and treat those around them with kindness and empathy. We are proud of the respectful way our students have prepared for March 14, 2018, and we support their desire to engage in meaningful conversation at such a difficult point in time.

Thank you for the trust you place in our school, and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.
