October 29 Parent Communication

Dear NCS Parents and Guardians:

As our calendars turn from October to November, we wanted to thank you for your continued trust at NCS. We have had a safe and productive start to the year, and that would not have been possible without your support. With the 2nd Quarter scheduled to begin on Monday, November 9, we wanted to pass along a handful of updates. However, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out (mfrahm@naplescsd.org, 585-374-7901).

Update on Learning Preference Changes:

A couple weeks ago, we asked that parents requesting changes related to learning preferences or transportation for the second 10 weeks of the school year complete a brief survey. We had over 70 individuals submit requests, and we have spent time this past week reviewing what might be possible. While we are optimistic that we will be able to honor the majority of the requests, we will need a few more days to work through some of the details. Please know that we appreciate your patience, and that we will reach out with individual phone calls to Elementary School parents on Monday and Tuesday, and to High School parents on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Emergency Go Home Drill:

On Monday, November 16, we will be practicing our mandated Emergency Go Home Drill. While we will be modifying our regular procedures to ensure social distancing, we will be dismissing students approximately 15 minutes early to be bused home that afternoon. For parents planning on picking their children up at school, we ask that they use the normal bus loops at 2:30 p.m.

Preparation for Remote Learning Meals:

Because it is difficult to know what the coming weeks and months might bring, we want to make sure we are prepared to make a smooth transition to remote learning if needed. While our faculty and staff have been working with students on the skills needed to engage in online learning, we are putting together a plan for dropping off free meals like we did this past spring. If you have any children in your households ages birth through 18 that would be interested in receiving regular breakfast/lunch packages in the event of a prolonged school closure, please fill out this survey (click here) as soon as possible.

Daily Health Screening with Operoo:

In recent weeks, a number of parents have commented on how helpful it would be if Operoo could generate daily health check text messages in addition to emails. We have been working with the company, and we are pleased to share that beginning on Monday, families will receive an Operoo email at 5:30 a.m. each morning followed by a text at 7:00 a.m. (Parents will not receive a text reminder if their health checks are completed by 7:00 a.m.) For parents who are not interested in receiving text messages from Operoo, we would ask that they email Healthy@naplescsd.org to have the function disabled.

Holiday Travel Reminder:

With the holidays quickly approaching, we wanted to remind families of the current travel advisory issued by New York State (click here for more information). If children are travelling to one of the restricted states, they should prepare to be out of in-person learning for the two-week quarantine period after their return.

Hoping this finds you safe, healthy, and well.

Best,

Matt
