New Faces in Naples: Mrs. Welch

Dear Naples School Community:

After extensively studying student performance, the researcher and policy expert Eric Hanushek found that “the difference between being taught by a highly capable and a less than capable teacher can translate into a full grade level of achievement in a single school year.” Fortunately for us, the Naples Central School District has always been home to an incredible group of educators.

As we prepare for the start of the 2019-2020 school year, I wanted to introduce many of the new faces you will see in our buildings by passing along information through our website and social media accounts. We are thrilled that Mrs. Margaret Welch will be joining our school family, and I would invite you to help us welcome her to Naples this fall.

Hope to see you soon.

Matt Frahm, Superintendent

Name: Mrs. Margaret Welch

Why did you decide to apply/accept the job in the Naples Central School District?

After interviewing with a few teachers from the elementary school, I knew that Naples was different from any other school district I have worked with before. I whole-heartily believe that students are most successful when teachers work together, and love what they do. To me, that was the impression that I had from meeting with those teachers, and still do today. Not to mention, I always wanted to work in a school district that was small and had the community support, something that Naples has as well.

What do you like the most about your job?

My favorite part about my job is the students, and more specifically, when students finally understand and learn something new. When I see that "light bulb" go off in their mind, it is like nothing else mattered up until that very moment.  They make the job so much fun.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I love doing anything that revolves around being outside or sports-related. On my bucket list, I have a goal to attend a baseball game in every baseball stadium in America, and so far I am at 7! When not watching a sports game, I love going for long runs, walks with my dog Sadie, or visiting various parks all over New York.

What types of books/magazines would we see on your bookshelf?

I have a range of books that I love to read. Anything from autobiography's from previous Presidents, self-improvement books, or even a book about short Irish folktales. For me, I think it is super important to read about multiple different topics because it allows me to stay educated, open-minded, and challenges me to read a variety of genres.

What is your favorite quote?

"For what it's worth, it's never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you are proud of, and if you find that you are not, I hope you have the strength to start over." - F. Scott Fitzgerald

What is your favorite food?

Wegman's Sub!

Tell us a little about your family.

My family is everything to me. My father is a businessman, my mother is a cancer research nurse, my sister is the modern-day Mother Theresa, as she worked at homeless shelter in Philadelphia for 5 years, and now is an Assistant Director for Leadership and Civic Engagement at RIT, and my younger brother is a recent college graduate, along with the funniest person you will ever meet. I recently just married my now husband, who is a Physical Education Teacher at Dansville, and we have a dog named Sadie.

If you were to leave a legacy here in Naples-what would it be?

If I were to leave a legacy here in Naples, it would be that kindness matters. In a world that has a lot of separation, anger, and confusion, I hold on to the fact that there is still so many ways to promote kindness, and if I can teach students to be kinder than necessary, they can change the world.
