Coaching Opportunities

Occasionally, the Naples Athletic Department experiences coaching vacancies.  If the department is unable to fill these vacancies with certified school personnel, these opportunities become available to the general public.  In order to work in the capacity of a coach however, non-teacher coaches are required to fulfill certain requirements, both before and during their tenure as coaches, in order to obtain a Professional Coaches License.  As a convenience to those individuals who are interested in pursuing such opportunities, below are the steps to becoming eligible for employment as a coach.  Because these are summarized steps, further details pertaining to the most up-to-date and accurate information should be explored at: http://www.flhsaa.org/coaching.cfm.
 
 
Steps to Obtaining a Professional Coaches License
 
1.)  Create a TEACH account at the below link: 
http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach/
 
2.)  Apply on the TEACH system for fingerprint clearance.
 
3.)  Complete the workshops for "School Violence Prevention and Intervention" and "Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment" and "DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) located at the below link (Note:  There may be other New York State approved providers that offer these courses.  Check here for  additional provider details): 
4.)  Complete a Red Cross "First Aid For Coaches" course.
 
5.)  Complete a New York State Approved AED / CPR course for coaches.
 
6.)  Once 1 through 5 are completed above, apply on the TEACH system for a Temporary Coaches License (must be renewed yearly until Professional Coaching Certification is granted).
  
7.)  Once you begin coaching, you must complete the following coaching courses.  Information on these courses can be obtained by visiting: http://www.flhsaa.org/coaching.cfm.
 
    *  Completion of “Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics” within two years of initial appointment.
 
    *  Completion of “Health Sciences Applied to Coaching” within five years of initial appointment.
 
    *  Completion of “Theory and Techniques of Coaching” (sport specific) within five years of initial appointment.

8.)  Once coursework in #7 above is completed, and applicant has held a minimum of three Temporary Coaching Licenses in a specific sport, the coach is eligible to apply  for Professional Coaching Certification through TEACH.  Once Professional Certification has been issued, the coach will be given equal status with a certified teacher candidates for the purpose of appointment by the Board of Education.  (Professional Certification is sport specific, valid for three years, and must be renewed after such time.)
