Students should expect to meet with their school counselor multiple times throughout the school year. School Counselors will also teach group lessons in classrooms. Students can come to the CCO to discuss scheduling, career and college, an issue at school or at home, a scholarship or camp opportunity, a social-emotional issue, a behavioral concern, to discuss receiving additional support, etc.
School counseling services provide a link between home and school. School Counselors can also assist parents in finding referrals to a variety of agencies or programs. Examples include programs from the Department of Social Services, probation/PINS, outside counseling, substance abuse services, financial assistance programs, and health insurance resources. Please call your child’s counselor/psychologist for more information, or to request services.
Short-term and crisis counseling is also available, either through their school counselor or the school psychologist. Students can request counseling on their own or a parent can request services. Teachers will also refer a student to their school counselor at times. Parents can also seek out counselors to get assistance with parenting issues. Possible counseling goals include assisting a student in developing more effective decision making and problem-solving skills, increasing a student’s self-awareness, improving their conflict resolution skills, receiving education on substance use, and improving a student’s academic output.
